Thanks to a great response last week, we have only a few dozen cases remaining of these great Champagnes.
I love champagne, but I don’t drink as much as I would like because quality champagne usually starts in the $50-$60 range and profound champagne usually costs $100+. When I planned my last trip to Champagne, I was determined to find high-quality wines that I could sell for under $40 and a profound one that I could sell for under $60. Fortunately, I was able to achieve both goals (buying direct from the winery and skipping 2 layers of middlemen certainly helped)! Through patience, extensive tasting and visits, I finally found what I like to call, “high-end everyday champagne.” They have enough nuance, finesse and complexity for people to pontificate about but are priced for everyday consumption. That is Champagne Brice, located in Bouzy, in a nutshell. These are beautifully elegant Champagnes that remind me of a grower version of Pommery. So refined and classy with pitch perfect acidity and balance along with numerous Grand Cru vineyards in Bouzy, Cramant and Verzenay. Below are my favorites.
NV Brice Brut Rose – This is the exact type of rose you want to be drinking every day. Mineral, elegant, lithe nose, with exceptional purity and definition. Palate has terrific sap and intensity. Great finesse and length. Savory. Really really good. $38.99
NV Brice Bouzy Extra Brut Grand Cru Blanc de Blancs – And here is your everyday Blanc de Blancs. Forceful and mineral but still resolutely in the finesse driven style of the house. The terrific acidity frames the wealth of stark minerals and gorgeous density. Sap for days on the palate and big like great Blancs de Blanc should be, but by no means sacrificing the superb finesse. This is gorgeous and is about as dry as Blancs de Blancs get without being severe. $39.99
2008 Brice Bouzy Grand Cru – From one of the best vintages in recent memory comes this amazing value in vintage Champagne. It has an incredible level of finesse and sophistication. There is density, sap and incredible concentration all wrapped in the most elegant package you can believe. The nose offers up intense and powerful aromas of red fruits and compote. The palate has a sharp beginning, stunning balance, superb structure, and a long sappy finish that dissipates. This is a champagne to sit and contemplate like a great bottle of Burgundy. It is 80% Pinot Noir and 20% Chardonnay. $52.99
